A Note About Stripe and Artist Payouts
A few artists have asked a fair question about Stripe onboarding:
Why is Stripe asking for banking information, and is it safe?
We understand the hesitation. Banking information is sensitive, and no one should move through that kind of process blindly.
Behold uses Stripe to help manage artist payouts through our Shopify marketplace. Stripe is a major financial infrastructure company used by many ecommerce platforms, marketplaces, and businesses to process payments, verify sellers, and send payouts.
For Behold, the reason is simple:
We do not want artists sending private banking information directly to us.
Stripe handles that sensitive payment layer. When an artwork sells through the Behold marketplace, Stripe helps confirm who is being paid and enables the payout to be sent to the correct bank account.
Stripe is not just a random third-party form. Stripe Connect is specifically built for platforms and marketplaces that need to pay independent sellers, creators, vendors, and businesses. Stripe’s own documentation describes its onboarding process as a hosted flow that collects identity verification information directly from the user and adjusts what it asks for based on the account type, country, and payment requirements.
Why does Stripe need this information?
Because companies that move money are required to verify who is receiving funds. This helps with fraud prevention, identity verification, tax and payment compliance, and making sure payouts go to the right person or business. Stripe states that its onboarding tools help marketplaces manage these compliance requirements.
Shopify also identifies Stripe as part of its payment processing structure. In Shopify’s U.S. Payments Terms, Shopify says that where Stripe is the payment processor, payment processing is subject to Stripe’s connected account and services agreements.
Stripe also states that it encrypts sensitive data both in transit and at rest.
That said, artists should always read the permission language carefully. Some Stripe bank-linking features may request access to account details used for verification, account ownership, fraud prevention, and payout setup. Stripe’s Privacy Policy explains how it uses identity and verification data, and artists can review that directly.
Our position is straightforward:
Behold uses Stripe because artist payouts should be handled by a professional financial infrastructure provider — not manually by us.
We want artists to be paid safely, professionally, and reliably when their work sells.
As always, we are happy to answer questions.
